Address Gibb's Farm, PO Box 280, Karatu, Tanzania
Established in the early twenties as a coffee
farm, this small and intimate lodge situated on the slopes
of the Ngorongoro Highlands, just outside the crater itself,
has maintained much of its original charm. The strategic location
(at the entrance to the Highlands, midway between Lake Manyara
and the Ngorongoro Crater), the beauty of the surrounding
coffee plantations, the friendliness of the staff, and the
more than reasonable rates make of Gibb's Farm one of the
best options in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Accommodation is offered in 20 twin rooms
with en-suite bathrooms. The public areas -lounge, dining
room, bar, reading room, and gift shop- are situated in the
old colonial farmhouse, which served as such until 1972, when
the farm became a lodge. Rooms are set among the ten-acre
fruit and organic vegetable garden, where most of vegetables
and fruits served at the restaurant are grown.
Obviously, coffee is grown in the farm, and
then processed, roasted, and freshly served to the hotel guests.
As couldn't be otherwise in a farm with accommodation facilities,
food is mostly homemade and very good. The buffet lunch includes
a wide selection of savoury pies, vegetable dishes, some traditional
African specialities and salads, followed by a desert buffet.
Dinner consists of a 4-dish fixed menu.
There are many activities available, such as a 2.5-hour walk
to a nearby waterfall, birding walks with a resident naturalist,
and visits to the gardens and coffee plantation.
