Grumeti River Camp is located in the Western Corridor of the
Serengeti National Park, just north of the Grumeti River and
roughly 50 kilometres east of Lake Victoria. It is nestled
beneath tall trees, overlooking a tributary of the river where
a sparkling hippo pool can be found. This remote area is visited
by few travellers and offers phenomenal game viewing from
late May to mid July, when the sheer migratory herds of herbivores
pour through the western corridor before moving northward
to the Masai
Mara's greener pastures. On the contrary, during the rest
of the year game viewing isn't as good as in the Seronera
or Lobo areas of the Serengeti.
Accommodation in Grumeti River Camp consists
of 10 luxurious tents built on stone platforms, well spaced
from each other to guarantee privacy, and set along pathways
lit with fire torches that converge in the dining room. Décor
is African-style: wooden thatched roofs, native fabrics and
local sculptured furnishings. Every tent is complete with
a front verandah with safari chairs, as well as ceiling fans
and en-suite bathrooms. Guest areas are flamboyant and include
a lounge, domed bar, and inside and outside dinning areas,
all decorated with Yoruba beaded antique artefacts. The lounge
overlooks the hippo pool, where a band
of 15 to 20 large and amusing residents provide with many
moments of fascinating hippo-watching. Cuisine is mostly Pan-African,
prepared on traditional fires or in stone ovens.
Safari activities include 2 daily game-drives
in 4WD safari vehicles (accompanied by a ranger and an animal
tracker), birdwatching walks, and Lake Victoria daily excursions.
