Perched on the edge of the crater, the Maasai-inspired
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge offers accommodation in 30 private
cottages separated into three camps. The mud-and-thatch domed
cottages are stylish and luxurious, and arranged into three
different camps: North, South (with 12 suites each), and the
more intimate Tree Camp, with six suites.
Each room is decorated with panelled walls,
Tanzanian-hardwood floors, elegant antiques, grand chandeliers
and African crafts, and includes a large en-suite bathroom.
Suites have floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offer full
spectacular views of the crater, 500 meters below. Each camp
operates independently -as if they were separate Maasai villages-,
developing around a central living area that includes a lounge
and dining room, together with an outdoor dining area and
viewing decks.
The lodge offers numerous activities such
as daily game-drives in 4WD vehicles, half-day excursions
to the Olduvai Gorge archaeological site and the Shifting
Sands ash dune, and bird watching drives.
As with the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge, also
perched on the crater rim at an elevation of more than 2,000
metres, nights and early mornings in the Ngorongoro Crater
Lodge can be quite cold. Remember to bring some warm clothes
with you.
