Perched on the north-western rim of the crater, Ngorongoro Serena Lodge was designed to perfectly integrate into the natural scenery of this wildlife paradise. Built with local wood and river stone, covered with indigenous climbers and lianas, and garlanded by the cool highland mist, the lodge offers surreal uninterrupted views of the crater below.

Each of the 75 rooms features a private boulder-built balcony with spectacular views of the crater, all-in-all the most distinctive feature. Rooms are comfortable and spacious, with simple yet functional furniture and decorated with brass lamps, leather headboards, and prehistoric wall motifs depicting the crater wildlife. Rooms are complete with heating/air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.

The split-level lounge and dining room, although set indoors due to the prevailing cool climate, offer magnificent looks over the crater through full sliding-glass panels. Prehistoric wall motifs (replicas of those found in the nearby Olduvai Gorge), log fires and Maasai crafts and sculptures create a cosy atmosphere, enhanced by the smooth light of candles. The first class restaurant serves both African and international fare. Outdoor meals on the Crater's floor are available, both safari breakfasts (cooked in an acacia grove) and barbecue lunches (served by a hippo-filled pool).

Activities include daily game drives around the Crater floor, morning wildlife walks around the lodge with the resident naturalist, adventure hikes around the Ngorongoro Crater and the volcanoes of the nearby Crater Highlands, and day trips to Olduvai Gorge.

At an elevation of more than 2,000 metres, it gets pretty cold at night and in the early morning. It's thus recommended to pack some warm clothes.
